Own it – Do you know where your domain name is?

We’ve been running Scruffymonkey for over 8 years now with clients up and down the country of different sizes and demands from small independent business through to 30m+ turnover corporations.

One problem comes up frequently with all of them.

Ownership.

Ownership of what?

Their domain name.

Your domain name is a huge asset for your business. Its not just for your website, your email, your brand. It’s part of your business identity.

It can be so confusing for clients who may think that their domain name is automatically with the web builder. This is not necessarily the case as you can have your domain name with one hosting company and your website built on another.

We would press on you to find out where your domain name is. It’s your responsibility to understand where your domain name is hosted.

Any good web team will be able to help you if you are stuck in finding out who it is but please do make a note and keep a record of it for future reference. We guarantee you will need to know it in the future and ensure you have your details available for accessing it so you or your web team can help you if required.

You can also easily look up where a domain is registered here:

https://who.is/

Enter the domain name and when the result comes through, look at the registrar and it will tell you who it is registered with and also when it was registered and when it is up for renewal.

Domain names might be one of the cheapest purchases but the cost and hassle of not getting access to it can have large avoidable implications. A headache you certainly don’t need to have.
