Ok, here’s why we are called Scruffymonkey.

If we had a pound for every time we were asked that question – Well we wouldn’t be sitting here right now writing this!

The truth. We cant 100% take all the credit.

Little known fact….. Scruffymonkey didn’t truly start 7 years ago it actually goes back all the way to 2001.

The web was just becoming a thing back then – crazy I know. Web companies were a new thing still finding their feet. Some young budding entrepreneurs tried to get in the game with various start ups to kick things off and thats where the story starts.

The credit goes to Richard Marshall (Lin and Chris’s brother-in law) and to Lindsay. They were both teachers at the time and got involved in a funded business development course to start a web biz – They chose the name Scruffymonkey New Media. New media – Lols.

Anyhow, they did the course, loads of faffing and kicked it off. It did a few projects etc but was more of a tiny thing on the side – nothing major. A hobby at best. We all know the score if you want it to happen you have to be all in 100 percent.

Fast forward a year Chris met Lindsay and needed an email address so he was given one – a Scruffymonkey one!

There was power in that domain name. Chris noticed that when he had to give his email address, people did a double take or asked about it (oooh there is power in that). It was memorable. That’s exactly what you want from a brand – Chris really isn’t as stupid as he looks.

So Scruffymonkey pretty much sat there doing tiny bits.

Then in 2013, Chris told his old biz to ‘shove it’ and it was time to go it alone. Here is something extra funny – He was sick of working in IT so he thought it was logical to start his own IT biz. Oh dear, oh dear. Chris Dawes IT Consultancy was born. It lasted several months. Something happened though – he got approached to build a few websites due to previous work he had done and was recommended. When approached for help, Chris needed the pennies as all start-ups do so instantly said yes. This is when Chris found his groove again. He knew what he wanted to do. IT – You are nuts. You are a web designer!!!

Chris decided to end being an IT company and restart as a web company. He needed a name to kick it off – and it was sat there ready to go. Everything was in place. A conversation later and Scruffymonkey Digital Media Ltd was born.

Having the name Scruffymonkey has been massive for us. It was fate for sure. We truly love our name but we also love its heritage. It goes far beyond the family of Chris and Lin it goes much deeper.

Everything starts with an idea and a conversation mixed with doing what you love.
