Bowel Cancer West

Issue

Bowel Cancer West is a UK registered charity working tirelessly to improve the survival rates of people in the South West of England diagnosed with the condition, and raising awareness of bowel cancer and its symptoms, the importance of early diagnosis and what you can do to reduce your risk.

It had been struggling along with a website that had been built privately and was not covered by any maintenance service. The consequences of this were that the content was outdated, there was no functionality or behind-the-scenes maintenance and support, and no Google analytics. The website was virtually invisible on the internet and the client was left to try and upload content on an archaic system that was not SEO optimised.

Objectives

To refresh the website with optimised content, to increase its visibility.

Build a Frequently Asked Questions section

Create opportunities for donations, through Donate buttons and links at appropriate places throughout the website

Add functionality so viewers can download documents such as how to leave a legacy in your Will to the charity

Accessibility features to aid with disabilities and legal compliance

Solution

From the outset, this project required Scruffymonkey to download content from the old website, and in some cases request fresh content. This required working closely with the Bowel Cancer West team, as there was much to do in refreshing the copy supplied to make it more SEO optimised. Advice was given on how best to present the content, and discussions had about the style of site the client had in mind.

The use of videos that the client had was also incorporated into the website to help get their message across. These added variety and interest to the website. The key messaging of the website needed to be clearly found, such a symptoms of bowel cancer, living with bowel cancer, and minimising the risk.
In addition to developing the website, Scruffymonkey took control of the email system alongside it, thus ensuring continuity of service all from one resource.

Scruffymonkey are now a big part of the Bowel Cancer West team and are advising on how to run their sister-website, The Backyard Ultra, to ensure this keeps high in the Google rankings, and feeds into the main Bowel Cancer West website.

The website now integrates with all of the social media platforms for the charity, and the Scruffymonkey team are key to the development of campaigns for the organisation.
